Mulch

If there’s one thing you can do to protect your garden or landscape it’s to add mulch to it. It’s the one simple action you can take that could potentially bring your plants back to life and prevent current and future disasters.

We’re talking about real mulching with real workable materials that your plants will be able to benefit from. Granted that the alternative, painted chunks of wood, still has the potential to break down into the soil eventually, but the process is slow and ugly. It isn’t meant to serve the purposes that mulch naturally provides.

Carroll’s has been supplying safe, clean mulches for years. We only offer virgin tree mulches that are manufactured using the highest in production standards.

That means that our mulch comes directly from trees. We will never sell, secondhand mulch made from construction waste or used pallets. Click on the different mulches to learn more. Pick up or Delivery is available 6 days a week.

Red Mulch

Our shredded Red Mulch is color enhanced with non-toxic pigment giving it its bright color which contrasts beautifully with green landscapes. Best of all our red mulch is shredded using 100% pine log making it safe and reliable.

Mulching has many benefits such as: helps retain moisture in the soil, keeps soil cool in the summer and helps suppress weed growth. In addition, while the wood mulch decomposes it reduces soil compaction which leaves openings for roots to expand. Decomposition also returns micro nutrients and minerals including carbon into the soil which is essential for healthy plant growth. Mulch Basics – First clear the area of weeds and grass, measure the areas you intend to cover then call or come by Carroll’s Building Materials to place your Mulch order. The standard recommended depth for your mulch is 3″. At this depth one cubic yard of mulch will cover 108 Square feet. Try not to over mulch, excessive Mulch can pull roots to close to the surface, this will stress the plant during dry weather conditions. Weed barriers are not recommended beneath the mulch it will negate all of the benefits of the mulch while it decomposes. When mulching around trees avoid heaping mulch around the base of the tree because it can cause the bark to rot.

Finally, beware of cheap mulch made from wood from demolition materials, pallets or pressure treated lumber which can contain dangerously high levels of arsenic.

Chocolate Mulch

The primary functions of mulch are to inhibit the growth of weeds, to prevent the soil from eroding, and to retain the soil’s moisture. Many gardeners choose Chocolate Mulch, our natural black mulch, as it offers some benefits over the others.

Chocolate Mulch is made from Melaleuca. As it decomposes it breaks down into dark organic matter which works into the soil like an additive, making the soil more permeable and releasing nutrients into the plants.

Chocolate Melaleuca Mulch also retards the growth of weeds and slows water evaporation. Chocolate Mulch also enriches the soil by encouraging beneficial earthworms and replenishing microbes.

The rich, coarse texture also makes it aesthetically appealing. In shady areas it provides the perfect contrast for your foliage, thereby brightening them up and making them stand out.

Pine Bark Mulch

100% Pure Pine Bark makes an excellent mulch. Pine Bark Mulch doesn’t compact like most mulches and has a pleasant reddish brown color. Pine Bark holds up longer than most mulches and is also an excellent soil conditioner. It’s great for loosening up heavy soils, and because of its acidity, it promotes root growth and is great for your acid loving plants.

Cypress Mulch Blend

Our shredded Cypress Mulch Blend is a blend of Cypress and Pine log. This specialty wood mulch is known for its natural look and color which will contrast beautifully with your green landscape. Best of all our Mulch is safe and reliable, shredded using 100% pure Cypress and Pine Log.

Pine Straw

Pine Straw is the fresh fallen pine needles consisting primarily of longleaf and slash pines removed from the forest floor and bailed. Pine straw is a great choice for renewable, native organic mulch. Just a 2-3 inch layer of mulch is all that is required to create an effective weed barrier while allowing water to penetrate easily. The pine needles interlock together and stick into the ground below. So even on landscapes with a considerable slope the pine straw will not wash away under the frequent tropical rainstorms. Our pine needle straw is a 100% sustainable mulch, and provides a treeless alternative to traditional mulches.

Pine needle straw is slightly acidic so when it breaks down it keeps the soils ph low and acidic. Our all-natural straw makes an excellent choice as a mulch for many of the well-known Southern acid loving plants, trees & shrubs. The average square bale of straw is 12 x 13 x 27 inches long and weighs from 15-20 pounds. Bales spread approximately 50-60 square feet at 3-4 inches in depth.
